Brassaï pseudonym of Gyula Halász; (9 September 1899 – 8 July 1984)

From www.atgetphotography.com:
BRASSAI took his name from the town of his birth, Brasso, in Transylvania, then part of Hungary, later of Romania, and famous as the home of Count Dracula. He studied art at the academies of Budapest and Berlin before coming to Paris in the mid-twenties. He was completely disinterested in photography, if not scornful of it, until he saw the work being done by his acquaintance Andre Kertesz, which inspired him to take up the medium himself.

In the early thirties he set about photographing the night of Paris, especially at its more colorful and more disreputable levels. The results this project --- a fascinatingly tawdry collection of prostitutes, pimps, madams, transvestites, apaches, and assorted cold-eyed pleasure-seekers --- was published in 1933 as Paris de Nuit, one of the most remarkable of all photographic books.

Oh, Mz MC, thank you so much for starting this thread. There have been quite a few photos you've posted here that I can't remember seeing before, mixed in with some of my favourites. I like them all, but actually, my favourite ones are often the ones without people. Streetlamps, cobbled streets, the Seine, the gargoyles overlooking the city... such tangible atmosphere in all of these pictures, and he really is a master of composition.

Please let me add some more of my favourites...

They are astounding aren't they? Love your additions. :x

You're so right I think - the ones of the Parisian scenes without people are the best. They have such a tangible atmosphere - you can smell the air and feel the night in your very bones. Although I do like the one of the man running down the wet street.

Actually I realised after I'd posted that I hadn't chosen many of the nightclub scenes that probably inspired the circus - but they simply weren't the ones I was drawn to.

I so enjoy looking at his work.

They are like monochrome paintings, aren't they?
"you can smell the air and feel the night in your very bones"
That's such a perfect way to describe it.

I really like the one with the running man too, but if I have to choose a favourite one with a human in it, it's the nude woman bathing at the washbowl. I love the atmosphere of that picture so much.

We should explore him more. :08:

My heart is racing with these beautiful stylized immersions into the Parisian night. I love them. I too prefer the ones sans humans. The composition is masterful. One feels the height and depth, and smells the weighted air. Wonderful thread!
