JR considers himself as "neither a street artist nor a photographer" (right---- well buddy, you have to fit in one of these threads, so I just chose this one! ).
JR (born 22 February 1983) is the pseudonym of a French photographer and artist whose identity is unconfirmed. Describing himself as a photograffeur, he fly posts large black-and-white photographic images in public locations, in a manner similar to the appropriation of the built environment by the graffiti artist. He states that the street is "the largest art gallery in the world". He started out on the streets of Paris. JR's work "often challenges widely held preconceptions and the reductive images propagated by advertising and the media. To carry out his projects, he uses photography but also video, prints on paper or tarpaulins, urban spaces, books, etc.
Agnès Varda and JR's “Faces Places”- Currently on Netflix! Agnes could have her own topic thread! A remarkable woman. Agnès Varda ( born 30 May 1928) is a Belgian-born French film director. Her films, photographs, and art installations focus on documentary realism, feminist issues, and social commentary with a distinctive experimental style. She has spent most of her working life in France. She has teamed up with JR in this documentary. They travel in JR’s van (equipped with a photo booth and a large-format printer) to small towns in France, which are as infused with nostalgia as are American small towns, and which are similarly threatened by the economic and social forces of modern life.
I'm so excited about exploring this duo, thank you so much for starting this thread, NR!! A few weeks ago another friend has recommended this film to me, but of course I forgot about it, as I made the big mistake of not writing it down...
So I'm thrilled that you knew of this guy and have introduced him here, NR. I'm looking forward to watching this film over the weekend.
Oh, wonderful! Glad I could remind you-we started watching last night. They're a compelling team. I thought there may be some of JR's work in our street art thread somewhere; is the ballerina posted in the Harbour or have you actually seen this in real life?
I've never been to New York... must remedy sometime in the near future.
I think it might have been back on our old forum, when DF and I have posted a bunch of ballerina themed street art, and it was amongst those. As was the little dancer sitting on a box next to JR in the photo you've posted of him.
I like it when life produces little full circles like this.
Well, I couldn't resist and wait for the weekend. I have just watched the film, and it was a pure delight. I'm so grateful for the recommendation, Mz K!
What a beautiful friendship between these two wonderful people. Brilliant and fun artistic ideas just pour out of them and they just make them happen. Their interactions with people and each other are so open and easy flowing. This was one of the most heart-warming thing I've seen in ages.
The trailer includes some of my favourite moments: the children tickling the feet of their mother's image on the wall... JR pushing Agnes around the Louvre in a wheelchair like two little kids...
