Spoiler:
This was a very emotional episode for all main characters.
June is the Master Mind looking for opportunities to persuade Serena to take charge and seize more power inside the Gilead elite.
The commander wants to reconcile and June told him to give Serena a real voice behind the scenes "of course". June suggested to Serena to use the new freedom inside her marriage to change the system.
The mothers bond between Serena and June is palpable and quite real in my opinion.
Aunt Lydia's attack on Janine was horrible! That June did not get punished for protecting Janine from Aunt Lydia is interesting to say the least. Does June have a special status because she belongs to a very powerful commander? Maybe...

It looks like Serena found her way back to her heart and humanity.
Partners and allies: if all the wives could agree to actively resist the regime's cruelty what would really happen?

Hey Mz. K - great synopsis of what is happening between June and the Powers-That-Be. I do think that the fact June isn't dealt with is a bit of a plot hole. I don't think they have established that, should something happen to June, the Resistance would suddenly rise up and attack, and therefore they are afraid of making June a martyr. Interestingly, June was wondering the definition of the word. It seems intuitive that June would not be a walking talking Handmaid in lieu of what she has so obviously done, along with the apparent fact everyone is aware of it. Perhaps the Commander is of a status where they feel he should dole out any punishment.

Aunt Lydia seems to be toast. She has been trying to show she isn't weak and took it too far, hence showing her weakness. She also displayed in public the dirty little secret of the cruelty administered to handmaids. It's one thing to know and another to overtly witness. Do you all feel sympathy for Lydia? I'm not sure I do, yet I understand she is a victim herself of the 'grey areas' and how to try to survive in this strange society.

Love that June saw the video of Luke & Nicole. It is very hard. She must relive this sacrifice daily and keep her eye on the bigger picture. Serena letting her know the school her daughter is attending is a huge thing.

These are a bit more slowly-moving episodes, but they establish where the characters are now. It is hard to watch Emily try to re-assimilate. I wish they had a bit more dialogue between these two characters as they try to form a family with so much time passed.

It is a delight to read your take on the episode Mz. L :x !

These episodes are moving at a slower pace and they give a sense of "being grounded" in this dangerous society. It is kind of being in the eye of the storm thing.

Serena is showing a more human side of herself but will it last?
Aunt Lydia is over doing it because she is helpless in the face of "unpredictable" behavior and decisions of the individuals she is in charge of. Even she can see that no harsh punishments and not even the fear of death will make people do what Gilead wants them to do. Sometimes too much is too much and people don't care anymore even if they know they are going to die.

Gilead is a predatory system disguising in clothes of "religious piety and righteousness".

Things will get really wild in the next episodes. It is extremely painful to discover the systematic depravity and cruelty of Gilead and the commanders.
I wonder if higher ranking commanders know about June's ties to the revolution but keep her under their eyes to try and contain a much bigger blow going onward.
I mean it seems ridiculous that this bit of information escaped their predatory eyes?

Interesting questions, DF (so good to have you posting on the show again). How much do they know about June's shenanigans? They've obviously figured out she has smuggled her baby out to her husband. Yet, hers no consequence... yet. Why is she not arrested immediately?

And yes, as Lori has pointed out, June seems to be getting away with a lot. But I think in the Putnam's house it was understandable. First of all, they feel indepbted to her for rescuing the baby on the bridge, when Janine as gonna jump off with her. And when she jumped to protect Janine from Aunt Lydia's blows, I think there was not one person in the room who didn't think 'thank god someone stopped her'. June almost acted like the collective will of everyone who stood there paralysed, seeing this poor broken soul being abused.

I am getting a little frustrated with Serena's two steps forward one step back, but hopefully these back steps will cease now, and she's going to gain momentum and find her role in the slowly brewing rebellion. I loved the sharing of the cigarette scene. "Wear the dress, pull the strings", great line.

I really enjoyed June negotiating Serena's increased personal freedom for her, it's just such an fantastic development in the relationship of the three. What I didn't like though was the line from June "It isn't love" when she was wondering about her complex feelings towards Waterford. Like duh, obviously it isn't. What an odd choice of word that was in this context. I writing was a bit more nuanced here. And I also agree with you, Lori, the lack of dialogue between Emily and her partner was frustrating. They've depicted the emotions of the situation brilliantly, but their conversation was not well written, and a lot of it wasn't written at all. The child actor didn't work for me. And I'm afraid I still don't get the chemistry between these two women. I found the Canadian scenes dragging without a much needed dialogue.

I didn't love though how the child's bedroom was covered in photographs of their little family, and the drawing of her mum as a superhero coming back to them was a beautiful touch. I think we are moving in this direction with Emily, and she is going to become this leading figure in the fight to free women back in Gilead.

I liked the flashbacks to Hanna's christening. How it was about being thankful for a beautiful, healthy child. How it was about that again with Nicole.

A bit lacklustre episode compared to the exceptionally high standard his show can reach, but still, many fantastic moments. And the photography remains breath taking.

Do I feel sympathy for Aunt Lydia? She's obviously losing her mind, so perhaps I'm not holding her fully responsible for what she's doing any more. I believe we are going to get a back storyline for her this season, and find out what has led her to become and Aunt. I imagine she suffered some great losses, and we will at least get to understand better what has led her down this path of becoming so singleminded in her apparent support of the regime, and so cruel in executing punishments. She's in a downward spiral, which is fascinating to watch.

Onwards, tonight!
